The Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization and the Department of Classics of the University of Colorado Boulder invite applications to join our interdisciplinary community of Scholars in Residence. This position will start Fall of 2020. The Benson Center Scholar in Residence is a one-year, non-tenure-track, Scholar-in-Residence, at-will appointment. Selections will be made on the basis of candidates’ relevance to our theme for the year, “Community or Disunity?”, as well as their ability to promote the larger mission of the Benson Center, to explore the culture, languages and ideas of the Western tradition, ranging from antiquity to modern society. The Center is especially concerned with the values that emerge from that tradition, and their ongoing role in the institutions of the United States. Integral to this mission is the Center’s commitment to fostering research, debate and dialogue on the fundamental issues of our time – moral, political and economic. Our aim is to promote a lively and balanced conversation that respects both conservative and liberal ideals, thus fostering the full diversity of political, economic and philosophical perspectives on the CU Boulder campus.

Scholars in Residence should expect to teach one course in the fall and one course in the spring. They may at will additionally engage the learning mission of the University in other ways. They will participate regularly in the extended community of the Center and the home department through attendance at lectures, engagement with students, and participation in the academic life of the University.

Applicants are also invited to name as potential mentors and research interlocutors scholars working on the Boulder campus in their respective professional fields.

The appointment will begin in August 2020.  Scholars-In Residence will be given office space and University of Colorado privileges. Salary will be $40,000 in addition to University benefits, including medical, dental, retirement, paid time off, tuition benefit and ECO Pass.

Please apply online at https://jobs.colorado.edu/jobs/JobDetail/?jobId=25039. To apply, please submit the following materials:

  1. Resume/CV
  2. Cover Letter
  3. Statement Describing How Work fits Benson Center Mission

During the application process you will need to enter contact information for three references and we will request letters of recommendation and additional materials, if needed, as the search progresses. The cover letter should articulate the intellectual significance of this project, the sort of tangible results that will be achieved by the end of the appointment, and how those results can contribute to the Center, a home department and the broader university community.  Full consideration will be given to applications received by April 24, 2020.  Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Note: Application materials will not be accepted via email. For consideration, applications must be submitted through CU Boulder Jobs.
