The History Department of Portland State University invites applications for the position of tenure-track assistant professor in the history of the ancient Mediterranean world, to begin September 16, 2011. Preference will be given to applicants whose research and teaching fields connect their area of specialization to world history. Applicants should have completed the PhD in the relevant field of study by the hire date.
Portland State University is located in downtown Portland, the major urban center of Oregon. The University is centered on the tree-lined South Park Blocks, an extensive greenway through the center of town, and is surrounded by numerous cafes, pubs, and restaurants. The History Department awards both the bachelors and masters degrees in History, and has recognized strengths that include world history, public history, European history, American history, Middle-Eastern history, East Asian history, and the history of the Pacific Northwest. The Department has established partnerships with the Pacific Historical Review, the Oregon Historical Society and the Center for Columbia River History. It has active chapters of Phi Alpha Theta and the Archaeological Institute of America, as well as an endowed alumni organization, Friends of History. It received PSU’s 2007 Award for Excellence in Departmental Civic Engagement.
