The Classics Program of the Department of Classics, Humanities & Italian Studies at the University of New Hampshire invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Associate, starting in August, 2021, for a two-year term, contingent on adequate performance. Duties will include teaching four courses during the academic year (2/2), pursuing an ongoing research agenda and performing related service. Minimum qualification is a PhD in Classics or a related field at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses that will promote the mission of the Responsible Governance and Sustainable Citizenship Project (RGSCP), an initiative at the University of New Hampshire to promote humanistic study of ethics, citizenship, principled leadership, responsible governance and grand challenges. Among the classes to be offered in 2021–22 are two or more of the following: “Athens, Rome and the Birth of the United States,” “Democracies and Republics,” or “Individual and Society in the Ancient World,” but there may be opportunities to propose new courses, including those that concern diversity, social justice and multiculturalism. Area of specialization is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching interests include personal and public ethics, political theory, democracy, social justice or sustainability, and who are interested in demonstrating the value of studying antiquity to illuminate issues in the contemporary world. The successful candidate should be qualified to teach Latin and/or Greek at all undergraduate levels, and will join a vibrantly interdisciplinary atmosphere in the University, the College of Liberal Arts, and the department.
