The office of the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis at the Harvard Art Museums invites applications for a Publications Research Editor position, which is a full-time, 5-year term position with possibility of renewal, to begin in the winter of 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Oversees the research and publication program (specifically, the Sardis Reports and Sardis Monographs series) for the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis at the Sardis Office at Harvard Art Museums. Primarily responsible for managing, editing, and coordinating the production of publications in the Sardis series. In addition to the above, may participate in certain fundraising activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Primary liaison with authors, series editors, and others during research and production of Sardis Expedition publications. Responds to queries. Organizes information in databases to facilitate access and utility for authors. Guides, educates, assists authors in working with databases, reports, graphic, other primary data.
• Maintains integrity, consistency, currency of databases and other records; formulates best practices for recording information to assure consistency. Works with authors, specialists to update databases and records to reflect current expert opinion.
• Works with authors, series editors, others to edit manuscripts for content as needed. Fact checks manuscripts before and after submission against original data. Reads entire manuscript at research and publication phases to determine if references and information match archaeological records. Identifies and resolves inconsistencies, consults with authors or others as needed.
• Member of Sardis Publications Committee. Reports to the Committee on all aspects of publications program, including budgets and forecasts; contributes to discussions and decisions about manuscripts, policies and standards. Develops and implements editorial policies, styles, standards and conventions.
• Prepares and monitors budgets and forecasts for publications ensures costs remain within approved budgets.
• Finds and hires outside copy-editors, indexers, bibliographers, and others as needed or does copy-editing and related tasks. Works closely with outside consultants to facilitate research and publication, e.g. with architects on plans and other drawings.
• Compiles working copies for peer review.
• May select, organize and modify photographs, drawings, other documentation for publication, with concomitant metadata, or collaborates to accomplish these activities. Determines documentation needed in field to complete publications. Works with other staff to accomplish this.
• Determines publication specifications for a manuscript’s printed format and print run, in consultation with author, staff and Publications Committee. Sources and hires vendors; obtains quotes and timelines for printing and distribution of publications; negotiates fees as needed; ensures publications meet specs. and standards; establishes timelines and deadlines; makes modifications to achieve goals. During printing production, is present to ensure quality control.
• Central liaison and clearinghouse between series editors, authors, printer and publisher (Harvard University Press). Maintains communication with HUP and Library of Congress. Maintains knowledge of their guidelines for assigning bibliographical information for publications; provides same to both for Sardis publications. Supplies HUP with information for brochures.
• Works with HUP to coordinate distribution of publications; sends review copies.
• Participates in and helps to coordinate publication-related projects of the expedition, e.g. database development, digitization of media, website design, other means of electronic distribution. Contributes to maintenance and update of databases and website.
• With Expedition Director, brings published information into databases for web distribution.
• Determines most effective method of distribution and access to publications, published records and maintaining databases for published material.
• Stays informed about standards and trends re: publication of site reports, collaborates with colleagues involved in similar projects, keeps Sardis publications program up to date.
• Contributes to grant proposals.
• Supervises students at office or expedition site.
• Develops and maintains close familiarity with history of the excavation, Sardis records, general recording system of site, current database and records, and archaeology of the site.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of related experience.

Additional Qualifications

Academic concentration in related field, archaeology, art history strongly preferred; experience facilitating research in archaeological site publication programs; experience with editing, fact-checking, proofreading and publication, particularly of archaeological site reports strongly preferred; experience with digitization preferred; experience with management of archaeological digital content and datasets, their standardization, clean up, preservation, and preparation for facilitation of research and final print and online publication; working with databases, spreadsheets, structured text files, and other standard forms of data storage; familiarity with image and drawing editing software (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.); ability to (and interest in) learn and apply new relevant software applications; experience with outreach to disseminate digital content and publications of archaeological projects and learning and keeping up with standards in the field of preservation and publication of archaeological data; demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, project management abilities, thoroughness; ability to be a self-starter and work independently, within a collegial and collaborative environment.

Additional Information

Harvard University, has been excavating at Sardis in western Turkey since 1958. The site has yielded finds from the Lydian, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and other cultures. The results of excavations of buildings and artifacts from all these periods are published in the Sardis Reports and Sardis Monograph series, in on-line versions of the printed publications, and in supporting on-line databases now in development.
