ROANOKE COLLEGE – SALEM, VA
Roanoke College invites applications for a tenure-track position in art history and archaeology with an emphasis in any area of the ancient Mediterranean world. Candidates will teach Introduction to Archaeology, art history surveys in the ancient Mediterranean world (courses in near-Eastern art and archaeology preferred), and Research Seminar in Art History. The appointee will be expected to develop upper-level courses in art history and archaeology that will serve the college’s Art History program, Anthropology concentration, Classics and Ancient Mediterranean World concentration, and innovative general education program, Intellectual Inquiry. Teaching contracts involve a three-year course load of 6/6/7, which normally includes an intensive learning course in May term as the seventh unit. The college requires a strong commitment to undergraduate education; teaching experience is preferable. Research and professional development are expected and financially supported through travel funds and internal grants. The successful candidate will possess a research agenda linked to an active program of excavation, and will demonstrate the pedagogical skills needed to teach in an undergraduate art history program. Teaching experience beyond graduate assistantships is strongly desired, as is experience teaching in a liberal arts setting. Ph.D. is expected by August 22, 2012.
Send a letter of interest, a statement of teaching philosophy focusing on the role of visual literacy in the undergraduate curriculum, curriculum vitae, graduate and undergraduate transcripts (unofficial acceptable), recent teaching evaluations, and three letters of recommendation, to Dr. Gordon E.
