SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY – FAIRFIELD, CT
The Department of History of Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT, invites applications to fill a tenure-track position in ancient history at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning September, 2007. A Ph.D. in hand or near completion by appointment is required.

The position carries a 4-course per semester teaching requirement. Normally, at least two of those courses will be sections of a core-curriculum course that is being introduced next fall: Common Core 101, The Human Journey. Coverage in CC101 includes the ancient world and the evolution of Western thought through the Renaissance, with special attention directed at the Catholic intellectual tradition. In addition, approximately one quarter of the course introduces the classical period in China up to the Qin-Han period. In broad strokes, the course objective is to focus students' attention on the ways by which humans have addressed the central and enduring questions of human life, viewing them from the perspective of both western and a non-western civilization. The course methodology involves exposing students extensively to primary sources that speak directly to the essential questions that are raised in the course, and inasmuch as the delivery mechanism we are using contains a substantial online component, it is expected that our successful candidate will become comfortable with instructional technology (Blackboard) that permits the integration of online services and printed texts.

We also expect our candidate both to offer a set of electives in ancient and Greco-Roman history that he or she will create under departmental supervision and to participate in our senior capstone course, Senior Seminar, a year-long research project that each of our roughly 85 majors completes under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Sacred Heart is primarily an undergraduate institution that strongly emphasizes teaching.
