The Department of Classics at Santa Clara University invites applications for a tenure-track position (pending funding) at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning September 2010. The department seeks a broadly trained classicist with a specialization in Greek language and literature who is able to teach Greek and Latin at all levels as well as classics in translation and classical culture. The successful applicant will be expected to teach a two-quarter Cultures and Ideas sequence in the new university core curriculum. Full-time teaching is six courses per academic year (two per quarter). An outstanding record of teaching excellence, evidence of success in a program of scholarly research and PhD in hand by the contractual start date are mandatory; potential for serving as chair of the department (post-tenure) is strongly preferred. POSITION ONE: The Department of Classics invites applications for a two-year lecturer position in Classics (pending funding) with a specialization in history, beginning fall 2010. Ph.D. preferred, but A.B.D. will be considered. The teaching load is seven quarter courses (e.g. 2-2-3), and includes sections of the following courses: Roman Republic, Roman Empire, a cross-disciplinary course in the Core for first-year students, one lower-division course yet to be determined, and an upper-division history course to be agreed upon by the lecturer and chair. In the second year, the lecturer will be expected to offer courses in Greek history. Proven excellence in teaching is extremely desirable. We will begin reviewing applications on April 1, 2010. A generalist with a specialization in Latin is ideal. Ph.D. preferred, but A.B.D. will be considered. The teaching load is seven quarter courses (e.g. 3-2-2), and includes sections of Intermediate and Advanced Latin (poetry), Greek Mythology, an upper-division literature or culture course in translation, and a cross-disciplinary course in the Core for first-year students.
