Dear SCS Member,

SCS staff, officers and committees have been preparing for the upcoming academic year. The following contains important information about the Placement Service and Annual Meeting Travel Stipends for both graduate students and contingent faculty.

We are currently resetting and upgrading the online Placement Service prior to opening the Service on or around July 25. In addition, the Committee on Placement has reviewed and revised the Placement Guidelines. While there are no significant changes to the guidelines, the Committee has updated and made clarifications to this important document. We recommend that departmental representatives and candidates review the revised guidelines here.

We are pleased to announce that $20,710 will be available in Annual Meeting Travel Stipends for the Toronto meeting. Many thanks to all of you who made generous donations to support this important program. Of this total, $12,500 is designated for contingent faculty, $6,000 for graduate students, and $2,210 as a pool that can be used for either contingent faculty or graduate students. Each travel award will be $250. Please read carefully the following procedures for applying for these funds.

Graduate students who have been notified that they will be presenting at the Annual Meeting and who would like to apply for a travel award should contact xd@classicalstudies.org as soon as possible with their full name, mailing address, and institutional affiliation as of September 2016. If requests exceed the amount available, a lottery will be used to pick recipients. If, after funds have been allocated to those students presenting at the meeting, funds remain, we will issue a second call for other students and allocate remaining funds by means of a lottery.

Contingent faculty who have been notified that they will be presenting at the Annual Meeting and who will not receive travel funds from their institutions should contact xd@classicalstudies.org as soon as possible with their full name, mailing address, job title, and institutional affiliation as of September 2016. For the purposes of this program, the Society is defining “contingent faculty” as any non-tenure-track faculty member, whether full or part time. After funds have been allocated to contingent faculty presenting at the meeting, we will allocate remaining funds to: (a) contingent faculty serving on SCS committees; and (b) other contingent faculty (by means of a lottery).
