Announcement: A New SCS Affiliated Group on Classics and Social Justice

A group of us interested in using our expertise in social justice work have been working together since the performance of Rhodessa Jones and the Medea Project at SCS 2016. We have now been granted status as an Affiliated Group.

Please join us at our first meeting as an Affiliated Group, Saturday, January 7 from 4:45pm-5:45pm in the Willow West Room at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel.

And attend the Roundtable discussion, Saturday, Jan. 7, at 12:15-1:45 where we will be discussing these issues: "Classics and Social Justice," organized by Dan-el Padilla, Amit Shilo, and Roberta Stewart.

Finally, look for a call for papers for SCS 2018 in Boston.

Our goal is to bring together scholars who are working to integrate their academic expertise (research and teaching) with community work promoting social justice and transformation. We focus on a type of outreach that brings Classics out of the academy in order to engage with real world problems, such as the lack of educational opportunity for the poor and incarcerated and the challenges of reintegration for combat veterans. We hope to enable scholars already engaged in this work to share their best practices; to provide resources for those wanting to get involved; finally to establish a regular, predictable venue for considering how teaching and activism can inform scholarship.
