Dear SCS Members,

The Professional Matters Division of the society has been working on a revised version of the Working Conditions section of the society’s Professional Ethics statement. The revision aims to address issues particularly relevant to contingent faculty. The SCS board approved the revision of the Working Conditions language on January 8, 2017. However, the society cannot adopt the revised language unless the membership votes to approve it. The matter will be put to a vote of members this summer. However, prior to the vote, we are soliciting comments and feedback on the revised Working Conditions section of the statement. Please read the procedures below carefully.

You can find the current Professional Ethics statement, including the current section on Working Conditions, here.

You can find the revised Working Conditions statement here.

Should you have comments on the revised Working Conditions statement, you should email the Executive Director at helen.cullyer@nyu.edu with your comments any time between now and March 1. The Executive Director will pass on all comments to Barbara Gold, the current VP for Professional Matters. Any member may request that the Executive Director anonymize their comments before passing them on to Prof. Gold. After March 1, Prof. Gold will review the comments with the Professional Matters Committee and others in the Professional Matters Division. If the Working Conditions section is revised further in response to member comments, the revision will need to be approved by the board in June, prior to a vote by members. SCS will disseminate the final version of the Working Conditions language prior to the opening of voting in summer 2017.

I hope that the above is a clear account of a somewhat complex procedure. Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Helen Cullyer
