Dear SCS Member,

Over the summer, the SCS office received applications for travel stipends from both graduate students and contingent faculty members who will be presenting at the upcoming Annual Meeting in Toronto. Owing to the high demand from graduate students, SCS staff ran a lottery and have informed the 33 graduate students who won that lottery that they will be receiving funds. We have now exhausted funds available for graduate students.

The SCS Office also received a number of applications from contingent faculty presenting at the meeting, but there are still funds remaining for contingent faculty. Any contingent faculty member who is serving on a SCS committee that will meet at the annual meeting, and who will not receive travel support from their institution should apply to xd@classicalstudies.org by October 21 for a travel stipend. The application should include name, institutional affiliation, title, and mailing address. If you are unsure whether your committee will meet in Toronto, you should email your committee chair or the Executive Director.

Once we have allocated funds to contingent faculty serving on committees, we will run a lottery to allocate further funds if money remains in the travel stipend pool.

Please also note that at its September meeting, the SCS Board of Directors approved an increase of the contingent faculty stipend from $250 to $300 on the grounds that AIA and SCS were unable to offer a reduced contingent faculty registration rate. The Board has also approved a reception for contingent faculty at the meeting. The reception will be organized by the new Contingent Faculty Committee.

Finally, we are delighted to learn that some institutions are providing travel support for their contingent faculty and hope that others will do the same.

Helen Cullyer

Executive Director
