The Department of History and Classics (www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/historyandclassics) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Roman Literature. Area of specialization is open, with preference given to candidates working in an area of Latin prose, such as historiography, biography, rhetoric, philosophy, the novel, or technical treatises. We encourage and welcome applicants with interests in gender and sexuality, class, social and political culture, or religion. Qualified candidates should hold a Ph.D. and demonstrate outstanding potential for a research career. The successful candidate will contribute to our curriculum at all levels, including courses in Greek, Latin, and Classical culture in translation and will play a leading role in our graduate program. Review of applications begins November 1, 2006 and will continue until the position is filled. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and rank of appointment. We will be conducting preliminary interviews at the American Philological Association meeting in San Diego in January 2007.

The Department of History and Classics has a dynamic and diverse group of 10 full-time Classicists, offering a full range of graduate degrees in Classical Languages and Classical Archaeology. We run yearly field schools in Italy and Greece, and have a good collection in our Classics Museum.
