HALF-TIME LECTURERS IN CLASSICS AND ANCIENT HISTORY

Department of Classics and Ancient History, Faculty of Arts, The University of Auckland, New Zealand. The Department of Classics and Ancient History in the University of Auckland, New Zealand, seeks to expand its teaching programme by appointing with effect early 2003, two half-time (0.5) Lecturers, one in Egyptology and the other in Greek and Roman Studies. These positions are offered on a temporary basis for three years, preferably for a period of thirty-six months, commencing 1 Febuary 2003. The start date may be open to negotiation.

Position One: Half-Time Lecturer in Ancient History (Egyptology). Vacancy A115-02. The scholar appointed to this position will have in hand, or be near to completing, a Ph.D. degree relevant to the study of ancient Egypt. He or she will be qualified to teach the history, archaeology and language of ancient Egypt, and a track record of successful teaching will be a distinct advantage. The duties of the position will include teaching Egyptological courses in the Department of Classics and Ancient History, from Stage 1 upwards, and continuing a programme of research in the Egyptological field. Some teaching at graduate level may be available for a suitably qualified appointee.

POSITION TWO: Half-Time Lecturer in Greek and Roman Studies. Vacancy A116-02. The scholar appointed to this position will have in hand, or be near to completing, a Ph.D. relevant to the study of ancient Greece and/or Rome (broadly understood). Scholars from all sub-fields are encouraged to apply. A track record of successful teaching will be a distinct advantage, and applicants should be able to teach Latin and/or Greek at least at under-graduate level. The duties of the position will include teaching Classical courses in the Department of Classics and Ancient History, from Stage 1 upwards, and continuing a programme of research relevant to the study of ancient Greece and/or Rome. Some teaching at graduate level may be available for a suitably qualified appointee.

The 2003 salary scale for Lecturers (full time) commences at NZ$50,639 per annum rising to NZ$60,492 per annum. New appointees in the Lecturer scale will be placed at a point on this scale which reflects qualifications and experience. In these half-time positions, the annual salary in each case will be between NZ$25,319.50 and NZ$30,246, rising (in the case of a Lecturer appointed below the top of the scale) by annual increments.
