UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL – BRISTON, AVON, UNITED KINGDOM

The postholder will contribute to the development and delivery of undergraduate and MA programmes in Classics and Ancient History, and supervise postgraduate research. S/he will pursue research in his/her specialist area, and disseminate the results in internationally recognised venues of publication. S/he will undertake administrative responsibilities in the Department, and also in the School of Humanities and Faculty of Arts. The postholder must have successfully completed the requirements for a PhD in Ancient Greek language and literature by the time the post is taken up. The University welcomes applicants from any specialisation within the broad field of Greek literary and cultural studies.

The appointee will combine disciplinary depth in Ancient Greek language and literature with an ability to engage in interdisciplinary conversations with scholars in other disciplines inside and outside Classics. An interest in myth, history of ideas or reception may be an advantage, but all specialties are equally encouraged. The appointee will have proven potential to conduct research of international excellence and will have publications that meet the criteria for submission in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. S/he will be an enthusiastic, committed and able teacher, with experience of teaching at least at undergraduate level. The panel will be looking for an individual of outstanding intellectual promise, vision and passion, who will contribute fully to the life of the department.

The post is a Pathway One lecturer. Progression to Senior Lecturer will occur within a maximum of eight years, assuming that performance targets are met. During the years before progression lecturers receive excellent support and training, career guidance and time to develop as teachers and researchers. Progression differs from promotion in that colleagues are assisted in achieving the expected level of performance and, when they come to be considered for progression, the onus is on the University to prove why they should not progress rather than the onus being on the individual to prove why he or she should be promoted. Senior Lecturer is seen as the standard career grade. Movement to Reader and Professor remains a matter of promotion.

The successful applicant will take up the post on 1 September 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary will be on Grade J in the range £34,223- £38,522. The post is offered on a permanent contract subject to satisfactory performance.
