The Department of Classics at the University of California at Berkeley has been authorized to make an appointment in Latin literature (effective July 1, 1999) either at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor (with tenure) or at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track). Ph.D. or equivalent must be in hand by July 1, 1999. Candidates must be fully competent in classical Latin and Greek and be prepared to teach a full range of courses in Latin authors. They should also demonstrate a research interest in literary aspects of Latin texts (esp. poetry) of the Republic or Early Empire. In addition, it is hoped that the successful candidate will enhance the Department's offerings in one or more of the following areas: literary theory, cultural studies, gender, social history.
