Ancient history. The History Department of the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a full-time position in ancient history. The department will conduct a broad search at all ranks in the areas of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine history (apart from late antiquity), in order to identify the strongest candidate, regardless of special field. Our aim is to find a scholar with wide interests and skills who crosses one or more of those boundaries. The appointment will begin in the fall semester, 2002. For junior candidates, PhD or ABD nearing completion is required.

Junior candidates (ABDs and applicants who have completed the PhD within the past five years) should submit a detailed letter of application, c.v. and placement file (or its equivalent), postmarked by November 15th. Others should send a cover letter, c.v., two recent publications, and names of three referees by that date.
