  1. The history and classics departments of the University of Chicago invite applications for a visiting assistant professorship in Roman history. The position will be for two years in the first instance though there may be the possibility of renewal of the visiting appointment. Preference will be given to candidates with completed dissertation, teaching experience and publications in the area of Roman social and economic history. Harper and Schmidt Instructor - The College of the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for several three-year postdoctoral Harper and Schmidt Instructorships beginning in the 2000-2001 academic year. Instructors teach two full-year sections of Common Core courses in the humanities that are required of all College students and pursue advanced research in their special areas. The Instructorships are open to scholars who will have received their Ph.D. degrees no later than June 30, 2000. The annual salary for 2000-2001 will be $34,000.

    Applicants should submit: 1) a cover sheet containing name, address and phone number of applicant, email address, title of dissertation and the discipline in which the Ph.D. will be awarded; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) three letters of recommendation; 4) a writing sample, preferably some portion of the dissertation, not to exceed 50 pages in length (this will not be returned); 5) a two-page statement describing your methods and goals in teaching a text in a general education course. Applicants should choose either Plato's, Apology, or Virginia Woolf's, A Room of One's Own; and 6) a self-addressed, stamped postcard that will be mailed back to indicate that all materials for the application have been received.
