POSITION 1: Position available: Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning September 2000. Applicants should have a research interest in Classical Art and Archaeology. The teaching responsibilities (5 courses over three quarters) include graduate and undergraduate courses in archaeology and civilization. Teaching experience is required; Ph.D. required by January 2000. POSITION 2: The University of Cincinnati invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of Classics. The appointment will be at the rank of advanced Associate or Full Professor. Applicants from outside the University of Cincinnati must have a research specialization in the literature or history of ancient Greece and Rome. Candidates should demonstrate a record of substantial publication, evidence of national and international recognition, and a record of effective teaching. The headship responsibilities include leadership and advocacy of the department's academic programs and management of the department's budget, class schedules, course offerings, teaching assignments, and staff. Interaction with the trustees of the Semple Classics Fund is also an important component of the position. The department offers the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees and has eleven full-time faculty members (five philologists, four archaeologists, two historians). It is housed as a single unit with offices, classrooms, lecture halls, and the library occupying adjoining floors. Its library contains one of the largest and best Classics, Byzantine, and Modern Greek collections in the world. More information about the department is available on our web page. The Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a one-year, visiting appointment at the assistant professor level in Greek archaeology, preferably with a specialty in Bronze Age archaeology. Applicants should be able to teach introductory courses in Greek art and archaeology, Classical civilization and ancient history as well as a graduate seminar in Bronze age archaeology. Teaching experience is necessary. Teaching load at the Classics Department is normally five courses per year on a quarter system.
