The Classics Department at the University of Florida invites applications for a second new position of a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Classics, with a research and teaching emphasis on Latin literature of the Republic or Empire (i.e., dissertation and/or significant research) and a secondary emphasis on Greek. The position commences in the Fall semester (late August 2001). Salary: competitive (figure dependent upon qualifications and experience). Applications from candidates with some experience in teaching and research will be given preference. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Classics in hand or awarded at the latest by 30 June 2001; ability to teach courses at all levels in Latin and Greek language and literature; proficiency and productivity in original scholarship are imperative; ability and eagerness to teach large lecture courses in classical civilization and literature. The Department offers a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., in Classics. Assignment: (normal teaching load is 4 courses per year): (a) teach Latin and Greek on all levels from beginning to graduate; (b) maintain a program of original research and active publication; (c) teach undergraduate lecture courses in classical civilization and literature; (d) perform other normal departmental service. Assignment: (a) teach Latin on all levels from beginning to graduate, Greek through at least the upper division; (b) maintain a program of original research and active publication; (c) teach undergraduate lecture courses in classical civilization and literature; (d) maintain a liaison with high school Latin teachers throughout the year; in addition, the selected candidate would oversee the Summer Institute for high school Latin teachers and work to develop a program which will assist students to become excellent teachers; (e) perform other normal departmental service.
