The Department of the Classics at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign has been authorized to make a full-time, tenure-track appointment in Latin literature at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning August 16, 2006. Area of specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates working in some area of Latin prose, such as Latin historiography, Roman technical treatises, biography, rhetoric and/or the novel. We seek a classicist who is eager to build connections with other literatures and disciplines. Teaching responsibilities will include large lecture courses in Classical Civilization, Latin language courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including Latin composition, and perhaps courses in comparative literature drawing on a variety of theoretical approaches to Latin literature and Roman culture. Competency in teaching Greek through the higher undergraduate levels is also expected. Untenured candidates with several years teaching experience and substantial publications are especially encouraged to apply. At minimum, the Ph.D. must be completed by August, 2006. Salary is commensurate with experience. To ensure full consideration, dossiers (including at least three letters of recommendation and evidence of excellence in teaching) and publications (or at least one approved chapter of a dissertation) must be received by November 15, 2005.
