The Department of Classics at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The starting date for this position is August 15, 2012.
The successful candidate will have a strong research record in ancient Greek literature and culture of any period through late antiquity, preferably with research interests that incorporate the study of material culture (e.g., religion, the body, spectacle, multicultural interactions). He or she must also have the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in ancient Greek, Latin, and classical humanities (classics in translation). Candidates must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Teaching experience at the college or university level is required, preferably including courses in classical mythology and Greek or Latin language.
The Department of Classics offers B.A. degrees in Latin, Latin and Greek, and Classical Humanities, as well as M.A. degrees in Latin and Latin and Greek. The University of Maryland is located four miles from Washington, D.C. and 32 miles from Baltimore, MD. The wider metropolitan area is home to many cultural and research institutions including the Center for Hellenic Studies, the Walters Art Gallery, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution.
