UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, COLLEGE PARK – COLLEGE PARK, MD

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 20, 2012

The Department of Classics at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The starting date for this position is August 23, 2013.

We seek a broadly trained Classicist whose research and teaching interests are focused on Latin prose; in particular, we are searching for someone whose work focuses on historiographic, rhetorical, and cultural issues. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach Latin courses on authors such as Cicero, Caesar, Livy, and Tacitus, and on topics in Roman culture taught in English. An interest in visual and material culture or in classical reception would complement the existing interests of the department.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Teaching experience at the college or university level is required, preferably including courses in Latin language and literature and in classical civilization; interest in Latin pedagogy and/or experience in working with K-12 Latin teachers is desirable.

The Department of Classics offers B.A. degrees in Latin, Latin and Greek, and Classical Humanities, as well as M.A. degrees in Latin and Latin and Greek. It enjoys close ties with the Departments of History, English, and Art History and Archaeology, which award the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees with concentrations in areas such as ancient history and classical reception. The successful candidate will thus have the opportunity to work with graduate students, and to collaborate with faculty, in these fields as well as in Classics.

The University of Maryland is located four miles from Washington, D.C. and 32 miles from Baltimore, MD. The wider metropolitan area is home to many cultural and research institutions including the Center for Hellenic Studies, Dumbarton Oaks, the Walters Art Gallery, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution.

For best consideration, candidates should submit a complete application by November 20, 2012. It must be submitted online at http://jobs.umd.edu and must include a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a copy of a published article (or one accepted for publication), and the names of three referees. Questions may be addressed to Dr. Gregory Staley, chair of the search committee, at gstaley@umd.edu. The appointment is contingent upon the continued availability of funding.
