The Department of Classics at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective Fall 1999. We seek a general classicist with a demonstrated, active interest in research. A Ph.D. is required along with proven success in teaching a large lecture course in classical mythology (200-400 students with teaching assistants). Other teaching responsibilities may include courses in translation and some Latin or Greek (a total load of 2-3). The department enjoys strong enrollments and anticipates dedicated teaching. Applicants with interest/experience in MAT programs, including Latin teaching methods atthe middle and high-school levels, will be especially welcome. Salary is negotiable and competitive. The Department of Classics at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst is seeking a general classicist with the ability to teach Latin, Greek and classical humanities, with a speciality in Latin pedagogy, second-language acquisition expertise in Latin and Greek, and considerable experience in dealing with local, state, regional and national classics organizations, especially those involved in secondary-level education.
