UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, BOSTON – BOSTON, MA

The Classics Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston announces a non-tenure track position for a Latinist for Academic Year 2013-14 (with the possibility of renewal), primarily to teach Latin at the elementary and intermediate levels (Fall 2013 and Spring 2014). The majority of in-class instruction will be conducted in Latin rather than English. Ørberg’s Lingua latina per se illustrata is the required textbook for the first three semesters, while the fourth semester will center on Ovid.

This position, at the rank of lecturer, can be offered to an instructor on a full-time basis, with a teaching load of four courses per semester, at a salary of $46,082, although we would also consider applicants who wish to teach fewer courses per semester (@ $5760.25/course). Positions filled at either 75% or 100% time will be benefited.

Qualifications Include: Master’s in Latin (doctorate preferred) and documented experience in speaking and writing Latin. Teaching experience is highly desirable.

To apply, please submit a cover letter detailing teaching experience and Latin speaking skill along with a c.v. Also required are two confidential letters of recommendation, at least one of which should comment on the applicant's proficiency in oral Latin. All materials should be sent via email to kenneth.rothwell@umb.edu or mailed to Kenneth Rothwell, Chair, Classics Department, UMass Boston, 100 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, MA 02125.

Review of applications will begin on April 1, 2013 and continue until the position is filled. Interviews will be conducted by arrangement via Skype, and candidates should expect to converse with members of the search committee in Latin for a portion of the interview.

The University of Massachusetts Boston is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity, Title IX Employer.
