The Department of Classical Studies at the U of M is seeking authorization to make a tenure track appointment in Greek literature with a special emphasis on poetry. We are looking for candidates who have strong philological competence, a broad knowledge of the field of classical studies, and familiarity with contemporary interpretive approaches. We particularly welcome expertise in archaic or Hellenistic poetry, as well as an active interest in building links to other departments and programs. Teaching responsibilities will include both undergraduate and graduate courses in Greek and Latin, as well as courses in classical civilization. The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan isseeking authorization to make a tenure track appointment in Latin with anemphasis on pedagogy and the training of Latin teachers at all levels. The successful candidate will have two main responsibilities: the coordination of our Elementary Latin Program and the supervision of Graduate Student Instructors for that program; and the direction of the MA in Latin with Teaching Certification Program. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in elementary and advanced Latin and courses in teaching methods. We are looking for a philologist with broad knowledge of Classics and familiarity with linguistic and language acquisition theory. The Department of Classical Studies and Program in Comparative Literature in conjunction with the International Institute at the University of Michigan HAVE been authorized to make an appointment in modern Greek literature and cultural studies (rank commensurate with qualifications and experience). Candidates should be prepared to participate fully in the Program in Comparative Literature and the activities of the International Institute as well as the Department of Classical Studies. The Ph.D. in a relevant field (preferably Classics or Comparative Literature) must be completed by Sept. 1, 1999. Preference will be given to candidates whose published work demonstrates interest in the links between literature other fields such as film, politics or history. Demonstrated enthusiasm for and experience in building Modern Greek Studies Programs will also be an asset.
