1) Classical Studies Field Librarian. The University of Michigan Library is launching an innovative new program of Field Librarianship designed to place public service where faculty and students do their work. We are looking for creative, energetic and outgoing people to work within academic departments and to develop highly interactive service relationships with their constituents, as well as assisting the University Library in collection, development, and instructional services.

Position Responsibilities: This position will provide support to the Classical Studies Department, the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, and the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology (IPCAA). With office space located in the Department and/or Kelsey Museum, the Librarian will be responsible for University Library collection development in the area of Classical Studies, will provide research consultation to faculty and graduate students, and provide both course-integrated instruction and workshops designed to foster the effective use of subject-resources and the effective applications of new technologies in teaching and scholarship. As a member of the Graduate Library Reference Department, this position offers the opportunity to be part of a collegial, dynamic, and creative team of advanced subject specialists highly committed to public services and the values of scholarly knowledge exchange. The Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library, with a collection over three million volumes, serves the research needs of scholars and students in the humanities and social sciences. The University of Michigan's outstanding collections supporting Classical Studies also include one of the world's foremost digital text and image collections.

As a librarian appointment within the University Library, the field librarian will participate in the full range of professional activities. This includes providing direct reference assistance to users at the Graduate Library Information Center, collaborating with colleagues on special projects and initiatives, participating in long-term planning and service assessment, and serving on library committees and task forces.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will be expected to bring a complement of advanced subject knowledge of Classical Studies, relevant language skills, and instructional technology expertise. Required qualifications include: An ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library or Information Science or an equivalent combination of education and professional library experience; an advanced degree in a humanities discipline relevant to this position; relevant language proficiency with Latin, Greek, French and German highly desirable; knowledge of bibliographic tools and information resources relevant to research in the humanities and social sciences as well as knowledge of the American and European book trades; experience and interest in the application of technology to research and teaching along with a strong commitment to public service to a diverse community.

2)The Department of Classical Studies and the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan have been authorized to make a tenure-track appointment in Greek Art and Archaeology. We particularly welcome candidates with expertise in the art and architecture of the Archaic, Classical or Hellenistic periods and who are also familiar with contemporary approaches to art historical analysis. Teaching responsibilities will include both undergraduate and graduate courses in classical art and archaeology; the ability to teach introductory-level surveys of both Greek and Roman archaeology is desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in IPCAA, the graduate-level Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology. The Ph.D. must be completed by August, 2002.
