UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN - ANN ARBOR, MI

The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan, expects to make an appointment in Greek literature at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, starting in September 2010. We are particularly looking for someone whose research interests lie in later Greek literature—broadly defined—from the fourth century B.C.E. down to the Second Sophistic and the ancient novel, but we will seriously consider other candidates whose research interests do not duplicate those of the present faculty. We welcome applications both from traditional philologists and from scholars who apply contemporary interpretive methods to literature. While an interest in philosophy would be very welcome, we are not looking for a specialist in philosophy or history, but in literature.

Every faculty member normally teaches a mixture of language and classical civilization or Great Books courses each year. The person appointed will share in the teaching rotation for one of the large first-year lecture courses (either Classical Civilization or Great Books) taught every fall term, and also in the rotation for the graduate survey of Greek Literature (taught in alternate years). Other teaching responsibilities will include Greek courses, especially Hellenistic poetry and Greek literature of the Roman period, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Courses may also be organized around themes or genres. We hope that the candidate will also sometimes teach the required graduate course in Greek Prose Composition.

The Ph.D. must be completed by August 2009, but preference will be given to candidates whose dissertations are complete at the time of application. Please send a dossier including a letter of application, at least three letters of recommendation, current C.V., evidence of teaching experience, a statement of current and future research plans, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and a writing sample to the Greek Search Committee, Department of Classical Studies, University of Michigan, 2160 Angell Hall, 435 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1003, or in a pdf format to lsa-classics-search@umich.edu, by November 16, 2009. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. The University is supportive of the needs of dual career couples. The University of Michigan is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action employer.
