The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota invites applications for one, and possibly a second, non-renewable 9-month appointment(s) to replace regular faculty on sabbatical leave. Appointment will be at the rank of Temporary Instructor or, for candidates with PhD in hand, Temporary Assistant Professor. Research specialization can be in any area of either Greek or Latin language and literature. If two appointments are made, preference in the second appointment will be given to candidates specializing in the language not represented by the first appointment. Competence to teach Latin and Greek courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels is required. The teaching load for each position will be 4 courses, at least one of which will be a large lecture course in Greek or Roman civilization. Candidates must provide evidence of successful teaching and show promise as scholars. Preference will be given to candidates who will have completed all requirements for the PhD by the start of the appointment, August 25, 2003. Visiting faculty will be appointed at the same rank as their home institution. ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN WORLD. Department of History, College of Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities: full-time, 9 month, tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with tenure, to begin August 25, 2003. Period and specialization within the framework of Greco-Roman antiquity is open. Tenure and budget in Department of History; teaching duties divided equally between History and Classical and Near Eastern Studies (CNES). Teaching in History includes survey courses, and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Greek and/or Roman history. In CNES candidates must be able to teach courses at both levels, including courses in the relevant ancient language or languages (Greek and/or Latin). Ph.D. in history or classical studies with a specific focus on history must be in hand before start of appointment. A brief extension may be granted to those with ABD if all that remains is the formal conferring of the degree. Teaching experience and a record of publication are required at the associate professor level and preferred at the assistant professor level. Candidates must show evidence of (or the promise of) scholarly distinction in the history of Greco-Roman Antiquity and a desire to strengthen the graduate program in Ancient History. Assistant Professor in Early Judaism. The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota seeks to make an appointment at the rank of assistant professor in the area of Early Judaism. The precise area of research specialization is open, but may include classical rabbinics (mishnah and Talmud), Dead Sea Scrolls, the history of interpretation (midrash, targum, or "rewritten Bible"), sectarian literature (apocrypha/pseudepigrapha), the history of the post-biblical period, Hellenistic Judaism (e.g. Philo, Josephus, LXX).

The department integrates the disciplinary perspectives of Classics, Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Archaeology, to create a coherent program in the study of the ancient Mediterranean that includes the cultures, languages, and material remains of Greece, Rome, and the Ancient Near East. Faculty members share a strong commitment to the historical and philological analysis of the literature, culture, and religion of this period. Preference will be given to applicants who share these broad perspectives and can contribute to their development. Applicants should demonstrate clear expertise in classical Hebrew and relevant research languages, both ancient and modern, and be competent to offer undergraduate and graduate courses requiring those languages, as well as instruction in post-biblical Hebrew and/or Aramaic. Competence in Modern Hebrew is welcome. Teaching expectations include offering an undergraduate lecture class entitled: "Introduction to Judaism." The successful candidate will also be invited to join an expanding inter-disciplinary program in Jewish Studies, with faculty expertise ranging from antiquity to modernity. Candidates must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Jewish Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Religious Studies, Classics, Ancient History, or other appropriate field, by the start of the appointment.

The position will remain open until filled. The committee will begin on Nov. 15, 2002 to select candidates with whom to hold informational discussions.
