The Department of History (Faculté des Arts et des Sciences) seeks a Roman historian at the rank of assistant professor (adjoint) or beginning associate professor (agrégé). Specialisation in the late republican or imperial period is preferred; methods and interests are otherwise open.

Duties: courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Roman history, ancient history and ancillary disciplines; supervision of master’s and doctoral research; research and publication; participation in other activities of the department and the university. The successful candidate will be expected to work with the Centre d’études classiques and take part in its programmes. Requirements: proficiency in French (the exclusive language of teaching and administration in the Faculté des Arts et des Sciences); completed doctorate in history, classics or equivalent; publications; research within the field of Roman history, whatever the approach. A sound knowledge of the classical languages is essential.

Date of appointment: after 1 June 2006. The position is subject to budgetary approval.
