UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND – ARMIDALE, NSW, AUSTRALIA

The University of New England is seeking to appoint an early career Latinist to the above position, which was endowed by the late Dr Charles Tesoriero who taught Latin at the University for six years. The position is continuing (subject to a probationary period), and appointment will be made at Level B (Lecturer). Latin has been taught at the University since its inception in 1938.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach Latin at all undergraduate levels (ab initio to Honours), to follow a research program in Latin, and to supervise Honours and Postgraduate Research students. A commitment to work as part of a team to develop innovative and flexible approaches to teaching classical languages to both on-campus and distance education students is a sine qua non.

Applicants must have: a PhD in Latin or a closely related area; a commitment to teaching Latin at tertiary level; and an emerging research and publication profile in the discipline. Those whose main teaching and research focus is Greek or Ancient History will not be considered. However, Latinists who have these interests as well are strongly encouraged to apply; the successful applicant may be expected to make some contribution to these other teaching areas within Classics and Ancient History. The appointee will be expected as well to develop undergraduate units or modules in Classical Literature in translation. The ability to teach Greek and/or Ancient History is highly desirable, as is the willingness to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching approaches within the Faculty; but the primary orientation of this post is Latin of the Republican and Imperial periods through to Late Antiquity. Interests of other kinds (eg Medieval Latin, Neolatin, numismatics, epigraphy) may also be desirable.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Professor Jennifer Clark, Academic Director of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, phone: +61 2 6773 2335 or email jclark1@une.edu.au. Salary: A$80,513 to A$95,421 per annum (Level B) plus 17% employer superannuation and optional salary packaging.

Closing Date: 8 November 2012
