Assistant Professor of Classics – Latin Literature / Roman Culture
The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision at the rank of Assistant Professor of Classics in the area of Latin literature and Roman culture. The department expects to make this appointment beginning in August 2012. Applicants must have the Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment. Applicants must be able to teach Latin and ancient Greek language courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as classical civilization core and topics courses in translation, and also contribute to sustaining the department’s excellence in research and scholarship. Classical Studies at UNM is a vibrant and growing program that offers both BA and MA degrees, with 40+ undergraduate majors and 7 full-time graduate students. The Classics faculty and graduate student instructors serve over 2,500 students per year, offering a wide array of courses in Latin, ancient Greek and classical civilization in translation. The Classics program emphasizes excellence in philological training and exposure to the major trends in classical scholarship in order to prepare students for jobs and/or further graduate education.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a completed Ph.D. in Classics with an emphasis in Latin literature and Roman culture by August 1, 2012. Applicants must have demonstrated skill and experience teaching Latin and ancient Greek language courses, and lecture courses in classical civilization, at the college or university level. Applicants must have a demonstrated record of achievement in scholarly research in the area of Latin literature and Roman culture.
Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of the applicant’s scholarly expertise in one or more of the following fields is desirable: material culture, ancient religion, literary theory, and/or reception studies. Evidence of the applicant’s willingness or demonstrated ability to develop an on-line curriculum and provide on-line instruction is desirable. Evidence of the applicant’s experience or interest in developing and participating in study abroad programs is desirable.
