UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME - NOTRE DAME, IN
The University of Notre Dame is seeking a scholar in Religion and Literature, to support developing undergraduate and graduate programs in that field. As a Catholic research university, Notre Dame is dedicated to the principle of mutuality among the disciplines, a principle especially evident in the links between art and religious belief and knowledge. The College of Arts and Letters has just launched a minor in Religion and Literature, associating the department of Theology with the several departments of literature; and the Academic Council and the Graduate School have inaugurated an interdisciplinary "Doctorate in Literature" program, within which Religion and Literature is a possible specialization.

The successful candidate for this position will represent the field of Religion and Literature at Notre Dame and outside Notre Dame through scholarly publishing, lectures, and leadership in the professional community of the field; will teach annually at least one course in the field (in addition to courses taught in the home department); will advise and direct undergraduate and graduate students working in the field; and may assist the editorial work of the journal Religion and Literature.

The applicant should have a doctorate in Religion, Theology, or one of the national literatures, with relevant publications and teaching experience. He or she should take an interdisciplinary approach to the field, with both a broad and deep understanding of literature and a respect for the integrity of religious discourse and belief.

The appointment rank will be determined by the qualifications of the successful applicant. Though the field is interdisciplinary, the position will be housed in one of the following departments: English; Theology; Classics [includes Greek, Latin, Irish, Arabic, Syriac and Hebrew]; East Asian Languages and Literatures; German and Russian Languages and Literatures; Romance Languages and Literatures; or the Program of Liberal Studies. The salary will be competitive: the AAUP lists Notre Dame's salaries, at all ranks, in the # 1 rating. Notre Dame particularly seeks applications from minorities, women, and those who are attracted to a university with a Catholic identity.

Send letter and CV by November 16 to James Dougherty, 356 O'Shaughnessy Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556-5639. The letter should respond specifically to the qualifications, responsibilities and expectations outlined above.
