The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the field of Ancient History. The appointment will begin in Fall 2006, or at a later date as mutually agreed. We expect to appoint a scholar with a strong record of research and teaching, who will contribute to our curriculum at all levels, including courses in Greek and Latin, and will play a leading role in our graduate program in Ancient History. We will consider candidates in any specialty, but we are particularly interested in those whose research interests encompass the eastern Mediterranean and who would strengthen connections with programs in History, Archaeology, Religious Studies, Egyptology and the Ancient Near East. The Department of Classical Studies of the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral Fellowship in Classical archaeology, which will begin September 1, 2006. The Fellowship is open to archaeologists specializing in any period of Bronze Age or Classical antiquity, and there is the possibility of renewal. Familiarity with information technology as it relates to the study of Classics and Archaeology would be especially welcome. The postdoctoral fellow would be expected to offer assistance to Brian Rose during his term as President of the AIA, and to offer one course per semester related to his/her research. The Ph.D. must be in hand by August of 2006. POSITION ONE: The University of Pennsylvania invites applications for the Rodney S. Young Postdoctoral Fellowship, which will begin September 1, 2006. The Fellowship is open to archaeologists and language specialists who plan to publish a substantial bulk of material from the excavations and/or Mediterranean collection of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The areas of research include Italy, southern France, Greece, the Aegean islands, and Asia Minor. Only one Fellow will be appointed in any given year. Fellowships are for one academic year, but in exceptional circumstances may be renewed for an additional year. Fellows must be in residence at the Museum during the University’s academic year (normally September 1-May 31), and may offer a graduate-level seminar on their research. In addition, Fellows will be required to give a public lecture at the Museum in the spring. The stipend for 2006-07 will be $35,000, and Fellows will also receive health and dental benefits, academic support including office space and a computer, and library privileges. The University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a position in Classical Archaeology at the rank of Assistant Professor that will begin July 1, 2006. The appointment will be in the Department of Classical Studies. We will consider candidates who specialize in all areas of ancient Mediterranean Archaeology, but we are particularly interested in applications from specialists in the archaeology of the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as the Archaic and Classical periods. Essential qualifications include: a strong teaching record and the ability to develop new courses in archaeology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; experience and continuing involvement in archaeological fieldwork and the ability and willingness to train students at all levels in fieldwork; and an active interest in working with the Mediterranean collection of the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Teaching responsibilities may also occasionally include Latin or Greek at the beginning and intermediate levels.
