The School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics (HPRC) was established in 2001 within the Faculty of Arts and its strong reputation is built on excellence in both research and teaching. The disciplines within the School have been part of the University's curriculum since 1910. The history of the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean forms a core area of research and teaching in the Classics and Ancient History program. Staff interests are equally divided between the geographic core of Greece and Rome but also reach out to Greco-Roman Egypt and Roman Britain. The group's expertise covers a broad range of disciplines and subject areas including archaeology, art and architecture, politics and political ideology, social history, language and literature. The R.D. Milns Antiquities Museum, recently valued at $2.5m, is the most significant collection of classical artifacts in Queensland and among the best in Australia. The museum has significant holdings of documentary source material, including Greek and Roman coins, inscriptions and ostraka.
The successful appointee will provide a future vision that will give teaching and research programs in Classics and Ancient History at The University of Queensland an outstanding profile within Australian higher education and implement this vision by offering academic, research, teaching and organisational leadership that will expand research output, increase external funding support, build postgraduate culture, and broaden the undergraduate teaching base.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in a discipline within the broad field of Classics and Ancient History, and have an international reputation for excellence in research within a relevant field of Classics and Ancient History.
This is a full-time, continuing appointment at Academic Level E. The remuneration package will be $151,735.67 plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be $177,530.74).
