The Deaprtment of Classics at the University of Southern California will appoint a one-year, fixed-term lecturer for the 2001-2002 academic year. This position will involve teaching Latin and Greek from the elementary to advanced undergraduate levels, and possibly a civilization course. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the quality of the candidate's teaching; experience in ancient comedy and epic would be especially welcome. The Mellon fellow will be expected to work on a substantial research project during the term of appointment and to teach one course each semester in beginning or upper division Greek and Latin or in classical civilization (upper division). Candidates must have been awarded the Ph.D. after 1994 and must at least have completed all requirements for the degree by June 30, 2001. The field is open; those doing research on any aspect of ancient Mediterranean civilizations are welcome to apply. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the quality and promise of the research proposal, the quality of the candidate's teaching, and his or her potential contribution to the intellectual life of the department.
