UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY – SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Kevin Lee Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Ancient Greek, Department of Classics and Ancient History, School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI), Faculty of Arts, Reference No. 130264

The School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI) invites applications from qualified individuals for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, to be tenable in the Department of Classics and Ancient History in SOPHI in the Faculty of Arts. The appointment has been made possible through a co-funding arrangement between the University and the Kudos Foundation of Australia.

The Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney is a leading international centre for research and teaching in the ancient world. It boasts research and teaching strengths in ancient Greek and Roman history as well as Greek and Latin languages and culture (http://www.arts.usyd.edu.au/departs/cah). It collaborates closely with members of the sister Departments of Archaeology and Philosophy whose expertise lies in the ancient world.

The Department is currently enjoying an exciting period of renewal and growth. This includes participation in the foundation of a new Centre for Classical and Near Eastern Studies on campus, in collaboration with the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens, the Near Eastern Archaeological Foundation and others. The successful applicant may be accommodated in this new facility and will be expected to contribute to its vibrant research culture.

The Fellowship, named after Professor Kevin Lee, former Professor of Classics at the University of Sydney, will be offered to an outstanding classicist with broad-ranging interests in ancient Greek. Although mainly a research position, it includes a small amount of regular teaching, to be determined in consultation with the successful applicant, the Chair of the Department of Classics and Ancient History and the Head of School.

The successful applicant must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of ancient Greek (language, literature, history or culture), and evidence of research performance and potential at an international level. Experience in the organisation of research networks, workshops and seminars, and evidence of ability to work cooperatively with others, are desirable.

The position is full-time fixed term for up to two years (with the possibility of an extension to three years, subject to funding). Some financial assistance may be available to assist with travel to Sydney and, in the case of non-Australian candidates, with the expense of obtaining the necessary visa. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

Remuneration package: $76,754 - $82,389 (which includes a base salary Level A $64,858 - $69,620 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer's contribution to superannuation).
