Applications and expressions of interest are invited for the Chair of Classics. The University is seeking a scholar of international distinction with an outstanding record of research in Classical Studies. The successful applicant will be expected to promote teaching and research in the languages, literature, philosophy, and civilization of Greece and Rome. Although the successful applicant may have outstanding expertise in either ancient Greek or Latin, preference may be given to someone capable of providing a high level of academic leadership in both fields. The department of Classics, which the Professor will normally be expected to chair, is located in the School of Philosophy, Gender, History and Ancient World Studies, one of four Schools within the Faculty of Arts. The department presently has an enrolment of approximately 700 students enrolled at all levels. It has a distinguished reputation in Classical studies internationally, and its main research strengths include the Greek and Roman novel; Greek and Roman drama; Greek and Roman poetry; Roman history and historians; classical mythology.
The Professor of Classics will be expected to represent the whole discipline internationally and in the local community and work with members of the department and the Head of School, Professor Richard Waterhouse, in devising and implementing innovative teaching programs and research collaborations.
It is anticipated that interviews will be held within three months of the closing date.
The position is full time continuing. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

Renumeration package: $119,594 p.a. (9which includes a base salary Professor Level E $101,537 p.a., leave loading up to 17% employers contribution to superannuation). Closing Date 6 March 2002.
