The Department of Classics of the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level for a Latinist. We welcome candidates in all areas of Latin studies, including Medieval Latin and Late Antiquity, that complement the scholarly interests of the Department as well as the wider Classics community at the University of Virginia, which includes faculty from the Departments of History, Art, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. Candidates must also be able to teach Greek at all levels and to offer courses in Classical Civilization at the undergraduate level. The Department of Classics will have an opening for a Hellenist during the 1999-2000 academic year to replace a faculty member on leave. We will EITHER make a one year appointment for an entry-level position for someone to teach 5 courses over the year (one in translation, a graduate course preferably in an area normally not covered by the faculty, and undergraduate Greek and Latin); OR we will hire a more advanced scholar, whose interests complement those of the Department, to teach one undergraduate and one graduate course for one semester. Salary for either position will be $36,000.
