UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON – MADISON, WI
POSITION ONE: The Department of Classics at University of Wisconsin invites applications for an approved one-year replacement position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, to begin August 24, 2009. Applicants should have the Ph.D. in hand. Prior teaching experience is required. The department seeks a generalist to teach courses in ancient Greek and Latin languages at all levels and at least one lecture course on classical literature and culture in translation. Active engagement with students and departmental events is highly desirable. The teaching load is two courses in the fall semester and three in the spring.

POSITION TWO: The Department of Classics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for an open rank faculty position in Latin literature, with an emphasis on prose. Preference will be given to candidates at the level of Full or Associate Professor. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated excellence in scholarly research and publication and possess a broad interest in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to the promotion of graduate education in Classics.

HISTORY DEPARTMENT
The History Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for the Rowe Family Chair in the History of the Byzantine Empire, a full-time, tenure-track faculty position beginning August 2009 at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will have research experience in any period of Byzantine history, and the ability to teach broad and more specialized courses in the field, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants must have the Ph.D. by the beginning of the appointment in September 2009 and show promise of a distinguished career as a scholar and teacher.
