The Department of Classics at UMass Boston invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in the Fall 2011 semester. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Classics and show promise of becoming a productive scholar with a regular schedule of publications and an abiding interest in research. He/she will be prepared to offer a wide range of departmental courses, including undergraduate courses in Latin and Greek, large undergraduate sections in classical civilization, and graduate courses in the Department’s MA in Latin and Classical Humanities. He/she will have documentable interest and experience in such active methodologies for the teaching of Latin as oral Latin and Latin-Latin prose composition. Ideally, he/she will be able to develop and teach a Latin conversation class. In addition, he/she will be expected to participate (for additional compensation) in the Department’s summer Conventiculum Bostoniense, as well as taking on some administrative responsibility for it during the academic year.
We seek applicants committed to undergraduate education at a public, urban institution serving a highly diverse student body and to graduate education aimed primarily at teachers of Latin.
