VASSAR COLLEGE – POUGHKEEPSIE, NY
The Vassar College Department of Classics invites applications for the Blegen Research Fellowship in 2009-2010. Vassar College is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and is strongly and actively committed to diversity within its community. Applications from historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged. The fellowship is intended for a scholar who needs a year of reduced teaching responsibility to develop or bring to fruition a major research project. For 2009-2010, we invite applications from scholars specializing in any aspect of Greek or Roman language, literature, history, society or religion, but we have a preference for those considering questions that cross disciplinary or methodological boundaries or that engage with the broader Mediterranean world in some way. Applicants must have at least one year of full time teaching experience.

The fellow teaches two courses. One, of the Fellow's own devising, is a seminar at the advanced level taught in English translation and related to the Fellow's research interests. The other is a regular course from the department's curriculum appropriate to the Fellow's background.

The Fellowship carries a stipend appropriate to the Fellow's experience, plus benefits, and includes the use, without cost, of a furnished three-bedroom apartment (including utilities).

To receive full consideration, applications should be received by January 15, 2009. Please send to Bert Lott, Chair, Department of Classics, Box 733, Vassar College, 124 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12604, U.S.A. Please include: a curriculum vitae; a statement describing the content and current status of your proposed research project; one or two suggestions for an advanced seminar in English translation related to your interests (include title and brief course description); a representative sample of work; and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two referees, whom you should ask to send supporting letters to the above address before the deadline. The selection process will take into account the needs of the department in addition to the intrinsic merits of the applicant.
