  2. Blegen Research Fellow, 2000-01. The Vassar College Department of Classics invites applications for the Blegen Research Fellowship in 2000-01, which is intended for a scholar who requires a year of reduced teaching responsibility to develop or bring to fruition a major project in a specified area of research. The fellowship is tenable for one year by a scholar who has taught full-time at a college or university for at least three years and holds the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (or its equivalent). For the 2000-01 academic year we invite applications from scholars in Roman historical studies. In addition to pursuing his or her research, the Blegen Fellow will teach two courses, one per semester. One, of the Fellow's own devising, should be taught at the introductory level on a subject of interest to the general student body and related to the Fellow's research interests. In addition to this, the Fellow will teach the department's regular survey course on the Roman empire. It is also hoped that the Fellow will contribute to the intellectual life of the department and college in other less formal ways. The fellowship carries a stipend appropriate to experience, plus benefits, and the use, without cost, of a large, furnished two-bedroom apartment (including utilities). Families are welcome.

The deadline for applications is January 10, 2000. Applications should be sent to Robert Brown, Chair, Department of Classics, Box 733, Vassar College, 124 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12604-0733. The selection process will take into account the needs of the department in addition to the intrinsic merits of the applicant.
