Vassar College - Poughkeepsie, NY
1) Blegen Fellow Position, 2002-03. The Vassar College Department of Classics invites applications for the Blegen Research Fellowship in 2002-03, which is intended for a scholar who requires a year of reduced teaching responsibility to develop or bring to fruition a major project in a specified area of research. The fellowship is tenable for one year by a scholar who has taught full-time at a college or university for at least three years and holds the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (or its equivalent). For the 2002-03 academic year we invite applications from scholars involved in the study of Latin literature.

In addition to pursuing his or her research, the Blegen Fellow will teach two courses. One, of the Fellow's own devising, should be taught at the advanced level on a subject of interest to the general student body and related to the Fellow's research interests. In addition to this course, the Fellow will teach a course from the regular curriculum selected by the department according to need. For this purpose, the applicant must be able to teach an advanced level course in Latin involving close reading of texts. It is also hoped that the Fellow will contribute to the intellectual life of the department and college in other less formal ways. The fellowship carries a stipend appropriate to experience, plus benefits, and the use, without cost, of a large, furnished two bedroom apartment (including utilities).

The deadline for applications is January 15, 2002. Applications should be sent to Rachel Kitzinger, Chair, Department of Classics, Box 733, Vassar College, 124 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12604. Applications should include: (1) a curriculum vitae; (2) a statement describing the content and current status of the applicant's research project; (3) one or two suggestions for a general lecture course related to the applicant's interests (including a title and brief course description); (4) a representative specimen of the applicant's work; (5) the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two referees, whom the applicant should ask to send supporting letters to the above address without delay. The selection process will take into account the needs of the department in addition to the intrinsic merits of the applicant. Vassar College is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
