Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY (Two Positions)
POSITION ONE: Blegen Fellow Position, 2003-04. Vassar College Department of Classics invites applications for a one year Blegen Research Fellowship in 2003-04, for a scholar to develop or bring to fruition a major project in a specified area of research. The Fellowship is for someone who has taught full-time at a college/university for at least three years and holds the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (or equivalent). We invite applications from scholars involved in the study of late antiquity, including any aspect of late antiquity in connection with any geographical region. We would be especially pleased to appoint a candidate whose research and expertise span both Greek and Roman culture.

The Fellow teaches two courses. One, of the Fellow's own devising, is a seminar at the advanced level taught in English translation and related to the Fellow's research interests, but of general interest to the whole student body. The other course is selected by the department from our curriculum and may involve teaching of Greek or Latin at the intermediate/advanced level or may be a lecture course. Stipend appropriate to experience, plus benefits, and the use, without cost, of a furnished two bedroom apartment (including utilities).

Applications due January 15, 2003. Send to Robert Brown, Chair, Department of Classics, Box 733, Vassar College, 124 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12604. Include: a curriculum vitae; statement describing the content and current status of your research project; suggestions for a seminar related to your interests (include title and brief course description); representative sample of work; names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two referees, whom the applicant should ask to send supporting letters to the above address. Selection process will take into account the needs of the department in addition to the intrinsic merits of the applicant. Vassar College is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.

POSITION TWO: Visiting Position. The Department of Classics at Vassar College seeks a general classicist to fill a one-semester, fulltime replacement position for the spring semester of 2003 (January-May). The position involves teaching three undergraduate courses: intermediate Latin, advanced Greek, and a freshman writing course. We will favor candidates who are qualified to teach all three courses, but we may be able to make some adjustment to our course offerings for outstanding applicants who are not qualified in all three areas. Candidates should have the Ph.D. in hand or close to completion, and have had some teaching experience at the undergraduate level. The position carries a salary commensurate with rank and experience. A one-bedroom apartment is available across from campus. Send applications to Robert Brown, Chair, Department of Classics, Box 733, Vassar College, 124 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12604-0733. The deadline is November 15, 2002, and a decision will be made fairly quickly. Please include a covering letter and a curriculum vitae, and have your dossier sent without delay.
