Vassar College – Poughkeepsie, NY
Blegen Fellow Position, 2004-05. The Vassar College Department of Classics invites applications for the Blegen Research Fellowship in 2004-05, which is intended for a scholar who needs a year of reduced teaching responsibility to develop or bring to fruition a major project in a specified area of research. The Fellowship is tenable for one year by a scholar who has taught full-time at a college or university for at least three years and holds the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (or its equivalent). For 2004-05 we invite applications from scholars specializing in cultural connections between either Greece or Rome and other civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean. We would be especially pleased to appoint someone working on any aspect of Jewish civilization as it intersects with Greece and/or Rome. Vassar College is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.

The Fellow teaches two courses. One, of the Fellow's own devising, is a seminar at the advanced level taught in English translation and related to the Fellow's research interests, but of general interest to the whole student body. In 2004-05 the other course will be either intermediate Latin or an advanced Greek language course on a topic chosen by the Fellow in consultation with the department. Stipend is appropriate to experience, plus benefits, and the use, without cost, of a furnished two-bedroom apartment (including utilities).

Applications due January 15, 2004. Send to Robert Brown, Chair, Department of Classics, Box 733, Vassar College, 124 Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12604, USA. Please include: a curriculum vitae; a statement describing the content and current status of your research project; suggestions for a seminar in English translation related to your interests (include title and brief course description); suggestions for an advanced Greek course, if you have had experience in teaching Greek at this level; a representative sample of work; names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two referees, whom you should ask to send supporting letters to the above address as soon as possible. The selection process will take into account the needs of the department in addition to the intrinsic merits of the applicant.
