The Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a non-tenure-track appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor of Classical Studies. This position is a non-renewable 9-month appointment (August 2021-May 2022). We are seeking an archaeologist/art historian with the ability to teach Latin and/or Greek, who shares our commitment to collaborative and inclusive teaching and scholarship. The successful candidate will teach two courses a semester. In Fall 2021, the courses include an intermediate Latin prose and an honors colloquium in translation related to the candidate’s area of specialization. Courses in Spring 2022 will include a Greek or Latin class at the beginning or intermediate level and an upper-level course on Greek or Roman Art and Archaeology. The specialization within the art and archaeology of the Ancient Mediterranean is open, but we are particularly interested in candidates who will broaden our curriculum by offering courses related to digital humanities and/or diversity. VAP duties also include contributing to classics-related activities of the undergraduate honors society Eta Sigma Phi.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in the art/archaeology of the Ancient Mediterranean or related field at the time of the appointment
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Latin and/or Ancient Greek at the beginning and intermediate levels
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses in translation on Ancient Mediterranean cultures
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses on Greek and/or Roman visual and material culture, and demonstrated engagement with technology and methods in digital humanities
