The Department of Classics at The University of Iowa invites applications for a three-year Visiting Assistant Professor, to begin August 2019. This is a non-tenure track position. The teaching load is six courses per academic year. The successful candidate will teach Latin, Greek, ancient medicine, and other courses on the ancient world in English. Teaching experience in Latin, evidence of ability to teach Greek, and a record of teaching experience, research, or coursework in ancient science or medicine are required. A Ph.D. at the time of appointment is required. Salary is dependent on candidate’s experience and credentials.

The Department of Classics includes eight full-time faculty members, two visiting assistant professors, and four lecturers. The department also maintains strong ties with colleagues in Rhetoric, History, Art History, and Religious Studies. It supports an M.A. and a Ph.D. program in Classics, and undergraduate majors in Classical Languages and Ancient Civilization.

Education Required: Ph.D. in Classics or related field at time of appointment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience in Latin.
  • Evidence of ability (as demonstrated through coursework and/or teaching experience) to teach Greek language courses at all undergraduate levels.
  • Teaching experience, research, or coursework in ancient science or medicine.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience in Greek.
  • Teaching experience as lecturer in a large course taught in English (50+ students).

Salary: Commensurate
