WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY – LEXINGTON, VA

Washington and Lee University invites applications for a two-year position as a Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in Ancient History. The fellowship is open to candidates who earned their Ph.D. in spring 2011 or later, and is meant for those who intend to pursue careers as teacher-scholars in a liberal arts college setting. Candidates must have received a doctorate in ancient history or in Classics with a focus in ancient history. We particularly welcome innovative and non-traditional approaches to Ancient History, as well as courses that reflect newly emerging areas of research and teaching.

Fellows will have a reduced teaching load to allow time for scholarly development. Teaching duties consist of one course in each of our three terms. The Fellow will play an active role in reshaping curricular offerings, helping to catalyze the development of innovative pedagogies, interdisciplinary connections, and courses in new areas of the curriculum. The Fellow will also receive a research and conference travel allowance each year; a senior faculty member will serve as a teaching and research mentor.

Candidates should submit an application letter, curriculum vitae, a writing sample, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent on their behalf. All application materials must be submitted online at http://jobs.wlu.edu/postings/1489. Please address applications to Kevin Crotty, Chair of the Mellon Post-Doc Chair Committee. Review of applications will begin on April 5th and continue until the position is filled.
