Washington and Lee University invites applications for a new postdoctoral fellows program funded by the Mellon Foundation for recent Ph.D.s in the Humanities who intend to pursue careers as teachers-scholars in a liberal arts college setting. These two-year Fellowships are open to candidates who earned their Ph.D.s in spring 2009 or later. Fellows will play an active role in reshaping curricular offerings, helping to catalyze the development of innovative pedagogies, interdisciplinary connections, and courses in new areas of the curriculum. Fellows will have a reduced teaching load to allow time for scholarly development.
Junior Faculty Fellow in History of the Ancient World
The departments of Classics and History invite applications from candidates holding the Ph.D. in Ancient History or Classics. In addition to offering at least one introductory level course each year in Greek and/or Roman History, the candidate will offer courses in her or his area of expertise and interest. We particularly welcome innovative and non-traditional approaches to Ancient History, as well as courses that reflect newly emerging areas of research and teaching.
Mellon Junior Faculty Fellows will receive a research and conference travel allowance each year; a senior faculty member will serve as a teaching and research mentor. Applications—including a cv, letter relating qualifications and career aspirations to the purpose of the Fellowship, a 20-page writing sample, a brief teaching statement, and two letters of reference—should be submitted to Dean Hank Dobin, 23 Washington Hall, Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia 24450.
