The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the position of Andrew W. Mellon Professor-in-Charge of the School of Classical Studies, beginning in summer 2015, for an initial term of three years (2015-2018).

Organization: The American Academy in Rome, founded in 1894, is an independent, privately funded institution that supports innovative artists, writers and scholars living and working together in a dynamic international community. The core of this group is approximately 30 Fellows—-Rome Prize winners selected each year by rotating juries who review up to 1000 applications from across the United States. This is a vibrant moment in the life of the institution with a critical legacy in the national profile of the arts and humanities, one which will increasingly have a role as a global, digitally connected hub. With offices in New York, the Academy is led by the President and CEO, with its program in Rome led by the Director. The Director, together with the Mellon Professor and the Andrew Heiskell Arts Director, anchor the Rome-based program team.

Position Description

Responsibilities: The American Academy in Rome seeks a distinguished and energetic scholar to serve as Andrew W. Mellon Professor-in-Charge of the School of Classical Studies for an initial term of three years beginning in the summer of 2015. Candidates should have extensive experience in one or more fields of the humanities represented in the fellowship fields – Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance/Early Modern, and Modern Italian studies. In addition, s/he must have the ability and experience to help advance the work of the Rome Prize Fellows, as well as coordinate events and publications in the diverse humanities fields represented at the Academy. Among the duties and responsibilities of the Mellon Professor are the following:

  • Help advance the work of the Rome Prize winners especially in the School of Classical Studies, through scholarly mentoring; by facilitating contacts for fellowship recipients with their Italian counterparts; by and by leading site visits in and around Rome and longer trips in Italy and the Mediterranean;
  • Work with the Programs staff and the Director to organize a vibrant public events program, including scheduling, communications, and budgeting;
  • Help expand the Academy’s contacts among the Roman scholarly and creative community by facilitating collaborations with local institutions, including Italian universities and the other foreign schools;
  • Together with the Director and the Publications Committee, play a key role in developing the Academy’s publishing program;
  • Help organize and coordinate the Academy’s summer programs in the humanities, including the Classical Summer School, the Summer Skills in Archaeology program, and the periodic summer seminars for college teachers supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities;
  • Together with the Director, contribute to the planning for and work of the Trustee Committee on the School of Classical Studies by identifying appropriate topics for committee discussion, preparing the necessary background and research materials, attending the Committee meetings, and undertaking other appropriate tasks;
  • Support fundraising efforts by making the Academy's mission, programs, and quality known to potential friends and supporters. Confer and cooperate with the Director and External Affairs officer(s); help articulate, sometimes in grant proposals or reports, the Academy’s needs and progress;
  • As requested by the Director, represent the Academy officially at functions and with organizations in Rome and Italy in general, such as the Union of Academies, the Fulbright Commission, etc.
  • If requested by the Director, temporarily assume the duties and responsibilities of the Director, when she is away from the Academy or unable to fulfill those duties and responsibilities;
  • Assume other responsibilities as may be assigned occasionally by the Director.

The Mellon Professor is a residential member of staff. S/he lives on the American Academy property and like other residential staff, assists with after-hour emergencies and other situations.

Qualifications The Mellon Professor, who reports to the Director in Rome, should have a familiarity with the sites and monuments of Rome and Italy, a good speaking knowledge of Italian and broad intellectual interests that would enable her/him to develop and lead programs in fields other than his or her own. S/he should also possess the maturity, intellectual generosity and interpersonal skills to mentor a diverse community of scholars. S/he will also be part of a senior program team that is responsible for planning, designing and executing the annual events program in the humanities and the arts. Salary and benefits are negotiable and will be competitive.
